Aldgate East Station is served by two underground lines - the Hammersmith and City and the District lines.
It is situated in Zone One of the Underground system.
When planning your journey to the tour, we suggest that you give yourself plenty of time, and that you plan to arrive at the meeting point at least ten minutes before the designated departure time of 7pm.
It is a good idea to allocate 3 minutes for each station you will pass through en route to Aldgate East and then to add an extra ten minutes to allow for any unforeseen circumstances, such as tube delays.
Please be aware that Aldgate East Underground Station has exits at both ends of its platforms, so don't just head for the first exit you see.
When you leave the train please be sure to follow these instructions to ensure that you arrive at the correct exit.
Aldgate East Station
If you are coming from Central London, you will need to turn right as you step off the train.
Go up the stairs at the end of the platform, pass through the ticket barrier, and Exit Four is located on the right.
We meet on the pavement outside this exit.
If you are coming from the east of town, then please just reverse the above directions by turning left off the train.
You should ensure that you follow the platform signs, as in the photograph to the right, by going in the direction of the arrow that points to "Way Out and to Whitechapel Art Gallery."
Our tour begins at Aldgate East Underground Station not Aldgate. These are two different stations.
If you do, perchance, mistakenly go to Aldgate, don't worry, it's less than a ten minute walk to the correct station.
Simply turn left out of Aldgate Station, walk down Aldgate High Street, keep straight ahead over the main road (don't follow the pavement as it swings left) via the pedestrian crossing, keep ahead along Whitechapel High Street and, after a few minutes, you'll arrive at Aldgate East Station's Exit One.
Go past this exit and cross over Commercial Street via the traffic lights. Keep ahead on Whitechapel High Street and, when you reach the Burger King, veer right over the pedestrian crossing, and you will arrive outside Exit Four of Aldgate East Station where our walk begins.
Aldgate East is well served by London's bus network.
Exit Four of
Aldgate East Station
Our tour meets on the other side of Whitechapel High Street directly across from the Whitechapel Art Gallery.
So you just need to ensure you get off the bus at the said Gallery's stop.
Once off the bus, simply cross over the main road and Exit Four of Aldgate East Underground Station is directly on the other side.
One important thing to keep in mind if you are coming by bus is that London's traffic, particularly on week day evenings, can be extremely heavy, and snarl ups and traffic jams are common place.
These can greatly increase your journey time if you are coming by bus, so please be sure to allow plenty of time to allow for any traffic delays.
